So with only twelve days of class before finals and less than three months until I find myself sitting in my very first lecture of law school, I’ve been looking at good ol’ UA a little differently of late. It’s still the same place I’ve known and loved… I don’t know that IU (or anywhere else) will ever replace it, and I do know that I’m going to be a Tide fan for the rest of my life, but man have there been some memories. We’ll get into some more of those later… probably after graduation… but for now, I’m coming up with a list of things that I’ll be taking with me back to the Land of Corn.

  1. Two words: sweet tea
  2. Terms of endearment for every female I come in contact with. Like when I, talking to a girl in traffic that I did not know, said something along the lines of “Oh, honey, watch out now.”
  3. “I’ll tell you what…” — it’s about the only thing I say that I pronounce with any discernible southern accent. I don’t know why, but once you’ve said it like a hick once, you’re pretty much doomed.
  4. Sweet tea
  5. The true words to “Rocky Top”: “Fuck you, Rocky Top / Go to hell, Tennessee”
  6. Yes, it really does make it all better if you say “Bless their heart” after you insult them.
  7. Opening doors (even car doors) and standing up when women approach a table is second nature now.
  8. Two more words: Fried Okra. No, I’m not kidding.
  9. The sense to equate “hole in the wall” with “damn good food”
  10. Did I mention sweet tea?
  11. What it sounds like to hear 83,000 fans going absolutely crazy.
  12. A fucking diploma, bitches.

I’m sure there’s more. Feel free to add to the list if you’ve got anything.

Well… I’m glad to see that some good ole Southern culture and manners were injected into your yankee ass! But… before you leave the South behind… you must promise to watch the “Dukes of Hazzard” movie coming out this summer. Even though it will be nowhere near as good as the series… it will still give you Southern pride!

  2. Matt Schuh says:

After 6 years you ought to have a term on the Alabama legislature under your belt! :) If your affinity for your law school is even half of that for your alma mater consider yourself very lucky. Roll Tide!

  3. Manny says:

    SWEET TEA!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Manny says:

    City Cafe…bitch.

  5. Ali says:

From what I’ve tasted… although it hasn’t been much… I too enjoy Sweet tea. Why on earth people have ice tea that’s not pre-sweetened is beyond me sometimes. (Note to self to remember the difference this weekend… ugh)

As for the rest of your comments… the diploma hopefully looks nicer than mine does… and well… sounds like the South treated you well. I’ve never been all that far south myself.

  6. Teresa says:

How can y’all like sweet tea?! It’s simple syrup w/ a tea bag waived over the top.

    Iced tea straight up, thankyouverymuch.

Fried okra makes sense to me - but then again I think you can pretty much batter and fry anything and it would be good.

  7. Pete says:

    Teresa… do you drink soda/pop/coke/etc?

  8. Laura says:

If the tea doesn’t taste like syrup it’s not real sweet tea. The sweeter the better, and yes you can pretty much fry anything to make it good.

  9. Teresa says:

Pete, sometimes I drink soda, I am generally anti-carbonation. Besides, tea leaves taste good, cola w/o sugar is gross.

BTW I tried to cook okra once at home - in NJ - it was a baaaad plan. Apparently you can’t take a frozen bag and just microwave it.

  10. Ali says:

I’ve always wondered what okra tastes like. Never had it. We sell it on the rare occasion and I sometimes don’t even recognize it.

Tea leaves do taste good. Pre-Sweetened ice tea the way we have it in Canada is good. Sweet Tea the way they have it in the South is good. Unsweetened iced tea the way they have it in Taiwan is good. Hot tea (sweetened or not) is delicious (MANY varieties). However unsweetened ice tea the way I’ve been discovering it all throughout the USA… is a huge hit and miss thing. More misses than hits thank you very much.

  11. Pete says:

Teresa, I just think you’re crazy, that’s all.

  12. Rach says:

I live on sweet tea. If there’s a choice, I will ALWAYS choose sweet tea. There’s nothing more frustrating than going to a restaurant (like in FL) and having no sweet tea. And if it makes you cringe because it’s so syrup-y, you know it’s been made right.

  13. Amy says:

I think if you go up to Indiana and stand when a woman approaches a table you are going to get a lot of girls looking at you with “confusement”.

  14. Manny says:

Teresa, I am sorry. I agree with Pete.

  15. Teresa says:

The unsweetened thing is a hit or miss thing b/c some ppl insist on overbrewing and then you just get a bitter brown water.

Pete and Manny, I never claimed to be sane. In fact I am willing to bet most ppl would agree w/ your assesment.

As for okra, try it in an Indian restaurant. They do wonderous insane thing w/ veggies at those places.

  16. Manny says:

Teresa, I agree, Indian food is awesome. I love the spices. I can it forever or until it does something to my ulcer.

Pete I can’t believe it’s almost over. I want to fly back for some city cafe, cheap mexican food, ribs, fried okra, white people looking at me and of course my first love - sweet tea.

  17. RJ says:

You’re just still pissed Bama couldn’t get it down at good ole’ Rocky Top this past football season. Better luck next year.

  18. Pete says:

One game doesn’t make or break a season, and it certainly doesn’t make or break our tradition. Just remember who owns th series, punk.

  19. C.K. says:

Ice tea sucks, it taste bad. I usually just dump 3-4 sugar bags in the cup with some drop of milk!

And what the heck is okra?

  20. Kelly says:

Good Gawd, Pete, you make me happy (and proud) to be southern…you know that since you’ve lived down here for so long your blood has thinned out (maybe b/c of all that sweet tea?..) so when you go back to Yank land you’re going to freeze. You’ll be back. One winter there, and you’ll come crawling back. I’ve never known the University w/o Pete there, so it’s going to be strange. I want more posts like this, by the way!

  21. Teresa says:

C.K. Iced tea is the nectar of the gods!

Okra is a tall annual (Abelmoschus esculentus) of the mallow family that is cultivated for its mucilaginous green pods used especially in soups or stews - hey you asked!

  22. C.K. says:

Thanks Teresa for explaining on what Okra is!
