So I begin the job search today. Well, that’s not entirely true — I’ve been job browsing for quite some time now, but I realized that school is only 3 weeks off, so the browsing needs to stop and the “hunting” needs to start. In my browsing thus far I’ve been thoroughly unimpressed by the available job market for students without degrees who can only work 20-30 hours a week, and probably only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
But that’s not entirely true. There are lots of jobs like that. Problem is the lack of jobs meeting those requirements that also pay $25-30 an hour, which is a conservative estimate of what I think I’m worth. The problem, I believe, is not a job shortage, but that it doesn’t seem to be worth these companies’ time to post those ads because there are so few of us out there to respond.
As a result, I think I need to take out a “Help Willing” ad, to let the companies who DO have openings of that variety that I’m available. It would go something like this:
Help Willing:
Able-bodied, 23-year old, red-blooded American male unwilling to perform hard physical labor is seeking employment by an undemanding firm willing to pay more than $20 per hour for 20 - 30 hours a week, regardless of actual time spent at work. Is obnoxious, sarcastic, cocky, and can reach levels of condescension previously unheard of. Will tell you what he thinks in all situations, and is still young enough to know absolutely everything. This very valuable prospective employee will not be on the market long, so act now. Call in your very best offer to (206) 350-PETE, but don’t wait by your phone — only those employers granted an interview will receive replies. Job openings requiring “self-motivation”, “dedication”, or “customer service skills” need not apply.
So… anyone know about any openings like that?

were i looking to hire a copywriter, i’d call you in a heartbeat. excellent ad!
i say try it for real. hey, you never know, sometimes creativity wins.
It’d be interesting, that’s for sure. I’d love to see if I got any bites.
Why don’t you try LSAT tutoring? This company-
http://www.getprepped.com/job.html
pays about 30$/hour for people with scores like ours at IUB. Unfortunately, they only hire 2Ls and 3Ls (also at IUB). I plan to do it my 2nd year, although I don’t believe that it is for many hours per semester, although that is probably a good thing in some ways. Anyway, I guess my point is that many you could find some comparable organization where you are. Or you could go entrepeneurial on all of our asses and start your own LSAT prep service. People pay big money for that crap, especially suckers.
But if you really want to make big money without a degree or a lot of experience you only have once choice, commission-based sales. Assuming you can sell. Well, I guess the other option is starting your own business, but that’s really just the epitomy of commission-based sales.
Good ad. The competition should be stiff for such a candidate as you… perhaps you could be “Supreme Overlord of Procrastination”? I’m sure some firm or another would love to have such a qualified man as you on the payroll…. right?
Welfare line meet pete. Pete meet welfare line.
Point of question: What is 2Ls and 3Ls? Does that have anything to do with the law?
And is that your real number?
lol, Eric.
CK — that’s a voicemail number I have… calls go straight to VM and it gets emailed to me. I use that number instead of my home number for bills and such.
1L, 2L, and 3L correspond to First, Second and Third-year Law School students respectively.
Oh wow, I didn’t know VM can be e-mailed to you.
How do you get one of those VM numbers?
Here…
I use K7.net, J2.com is also a free service (I think).
I’ve been happy with the service from K7, haven’t had any problems and it’s great for leaving yourself notes when you’re driving around.
Oh okay, so it’s not like service from an actual cell phone provider, right?
