I seldom talk about basketball because, Indiana University degree notwithstanding, I don’t follow it very closely. That said, this has got to be one of the most aggravating minor recruiting violations in recent memory, in any sport:
According to the report, when assistant coach Roshown McLeod left a voice mail for Muniru on Oct. 25, it was the school’s third call to him in a week — exceeding the NCAA limit by one.
Coach Tom Crean, who normally makes one call per week to recruits, placed two to Muniru — the Sunday and Wednesday before McLeod’s call on a Saturday.
For those who don’t follow the Hoosiers or college basketball: Tom Crean took over the team after Kelvin Sampson was fired in the wake of some pretty serious NCAA infractions (surprising approximately nobody after his track-record at Oklahoma), and extra recruiting calls were one of his noted extra-curriculars.
The bottom line is that this still isn’t that big of a deal, and even catching this kind of violation in the first place is difficult, but for the love of god, would someone in the IU athletic department please take an Intro to Counting class or something and then maybe come back and tutor the basketball staff?
