There is a blurb in the AJC today about an 11-year-old boy who walked from Tallahassee to Atlanta… for the homeless.

The first thought that went through my mind when I read the blurb (and I use that term in the most disparaging possible sense) is… who lets their child walk hundreds of miles for ANYTHING? The second was: what the hell good does walking a lot do for the homeless?

You see… the “article” doesn’t mention what the point was.

It turns out that this kid has raised all sorts of money and things for the homeless, which is great, but the article doesn’t give us any of that information. Just that he was walking for the homeless and, hooray, he was successful!

So it turns out that the whole fucking point of his walk was completely missed by Ben Smith who chose, instead, to focus on the boy “pump[ing] his fists in the air.” Nice work. How do people like this get jobs, anyhow?

The few people I know from Atlanta can’t stand the AJC. They think it’s embarrasing for a big town to have that bad of a local paper.

I’ll refrain from making comments on the 11 year old attending “online” school.

It looks like my hopes of writing for a news publication have been renewed! I excel at half-assed writing.

I think it’s really pitiful that they didn’t include the real reason he was walking - so that maybe 10’s of people could give him the $5/mile that they pledged for him to walk for 5 miles.

“That’ll be $1395 for the homeless, please.”
