Last week Deer Park finally closed out my account and sent me the statement of fees and things. I’m not at all surprised that they are doing everything they can to try to screw me over. They’re asking for almost $3,000 in “repairs”, well over half of it is for “Carpet Replacement”… oh, you mean the carpet that was supposed to be replaced shortly after we moved in, but never was? They claim that it must have been replaced because they have an invoice for it. Unfortunately for them, I took the day off of school to be there when the carpet replacement guys came (I don’t trust random workers wandering around my house). They left without replacing the carpet and never came back… so, invoice or no invoice, that carpet was never replaced.
I’m going through the motions of disputing the charges, but the moral of the story is this: do not, under any circumstances, rent from Deer Park Management in Bloomington, Indiana. Don’t rent from The Boulders, College Mall Apartments, Bart Villa, The Uptown Apartments, or Villa Genoa. (Hi, Google) I’m convinced that most of their profit comes from soaking people who move out and just assuming that people will just pay the fees. I’ve also heard that they’re in court more often than all of the other landlord in Bloomington combined… I wish I had known that before I signed my lease.
…
In other news, McAllister’s is open. Amanda and I went last night and it was good. They have sweet tea. I love sweet tea.
PS: Deer Park Sucks

When I’m searching for a public opinion on some good or service, the first thing I type into Google is “_____ Sucks.” So… good PS.

I love sweet tea too….it will probably be the death of me. I actually know someone though…who adds sugar to her sweet tea…of course it is hard to get good sweet tea in Cali.

Elkins is terrible, too. They would say they were coming to fix something and then not come. We got our final statement a couple weeks ago and they charged us for stuff we’d asked to have fixed. For example $150 for a crack in the fridge door when the fridge is older than me.
Good luck, Pete.

Sure is a shame they are doing this to a soon-to-be lawyer!!
That’s awesome to see McAlister’s make it up to Indiana. It seems like they are really going nationwide now. To think I used to go all the time to one of the original ones in Hattiesburg. Ah, memories.

You should never pay your last month’s rent for this exact reason.

Pete,
Any success fighting Deer Park? I am going through the same thing. I lived at the Manor House (main office on hillside) when the place caught fire. We moved to the Boulders after the fire, assured that they would “take care of us”. Indeed they did, sending a summons for the amount of $2700 in damages FIVE YEARS LATER! Any advice on this?
