You stay classy Madam Speaker.
The e-mail from Pelosi’s office reads, “Attached is a calendar for 2007 that has been prepared by Speaker Pelosi’s office. It was originally e-mailed out to Democratic offices in mid-December, but we wanted to e-mail it out again to ensure that all offices had seen it. We hope this calendar helps Democratic offices to plan press events and other activities for their member throughout the year.”
Included in the calendar is a Feb. 11 entry reminding House members of the anniversary of the day Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot fellow hunter Harry Whittington at the Armstrong Ranch.
The item reads simply, “Cheney hunting accident (2006).”
Anyone want to speculate as to why this date is important for those kind, compassionate, empathetic Democrats?

maybe they’re sick of Cheney having all the fun, and they want to make sure that they shoot someone in the face on that day. Y’know, just for effect.
Maybe we could turn it into national “shoot your lawyer in the face day.” hopefully, they’ll make it a holiday so that only the lawyers dumb enough to work on a holiday get shot in the face.
come to think of it, I don’t think I’m leaving the house on the 11th.

Does it matter? It’s not negative, it’s not positive, I don’t think it has anything to do with kindness, compassion or empathy. Unless it said something like “Cheney hunting accident: Everyone remember to mock him and/or shoot him today.” I don’t see why it’s a big deal to either include it or not.
I’m sure there are many other things you can mock dems for, Pete, why pick on something this petty?

It’s not negative to include a hunting accident in a calendar that “helps Democratic offices to plan press events and other activities for their member throughout the year”?
Sounds like she’s encouraging Democrats to use the personal tragedy as a press event.
At the very least it’s in poor taste to have one her personal calendar… you don’t send “I’m sorry you shot someone” cards.
Besides, I’m not saying anything about “Democrats” I’m talking about that class-act speaker that they elected.

This is a long way to go to criticise Pelosi. What is it about her that you find so discomforting?
February 9th, 2007 at 11:27 am
I just don’t like her. Don’t like her politics. Don’t like her public persona. Don’t like her brand of Democrat.
…and this isn’t really such a “long way to go”… it was very quick, easy, and obvious.

I love the quick, easy, and obvious criticisms. Mr. Bush is full of those.

Gotta agree with Pete on this one. The inclusion of this on a calendar and sent out in an email with some air of seriousness is incredibly - INCREDIBLY - crass and uncalled for.
As one who hates Republicans but still can’t quite side with the Democrats until they form some vision for the future beyond the partisan denouncing of anything GOP, I have to say that this is really disappointing. This makes Pelosi seem like a gloating, pathetic bitch with a grudge. Anyone who can’t see the puerility in this behavior by Pelosi - A FUCKING SENATOR AND A HOPE (apparently in vain) FOR THE FUTURE - is blinded by his or her allegiances. Where the hell is the gravitas of our politicians? Where the hell is the high road?
Just disappointed, that’s all…

Peter, she’s a FUCKING CONGRESSWOMAN. The House Speaker, in fact.
Isn’t it possible, and even likely, that this “e-mail from Pelosi’s office” was written by a staffer, and not the Speaker herself? That it, like many of the thousands of e-mails a House office sends every day, was sent without her approval or knowledge? (I worked in a Senator’s press office, and he didn’t write or even sign off on everything we released.) Maybe she was too busy actually working with people on both sides of the aisle to set and achieve a progressive agenda to micromanage her staffers’ e-mail.
I appreciate that there are many who are crying for an excuse to criticize Pelosi, and that they will occasionally be justified. But is this seems like a pretty trivial thing to complain about. Not unlike the hunting accident.
Can we take a peek at the official calendars from the GOP era? I wonder how many Clinton admistration “anniversaries” were included.
February 11th, 2007 at 10:09 am
Oooh… a watered down version of the “they did it too!” defense… it’s the “They might have done it, too!”
“Fucking congresswomen” (and men, just to be clear) are responsible for the things sent out from their offices in their names. Especially in the absence of any evidence that they weren’t aware of it and don’t approve of it.
Of course, it may be too much for some “true believers” to concede that Pelosi is probably just like every other politician on Capitol Hill… so they’ll look for any reason to justify and defend her.
Too bad that doesn’t make it okay. I personally don’t believe we should be celebrating hunting accidents, but that’s just me… it seems the Democratic ideal is a little different.
February 11th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
Whoops! Can’t believe I said senator - good correction…
But the FUCKING would stay…haha
Sorry…still can’t see this as being a trivial criticism…it speaks to a low-brow brand of politics focused on taking jabs at opposition rather than improving society for everyone. It’s a microcosm of the shitty state of mind of American politicians…

Peter, in the spirit of Speaker Pelosi and the new Democratic majority, I’ll be sure to remind you of this next year.
