Everything you need to know about the Mac versus Windows debate can be summed up very quickly in this post by Scott Adams about his idea that Bill Gates should run for president. Adams writes:

The man took one look at capitalism and beat it like a 14-year old boy with unrestricted Internet access. Bill Gates is a winner. Wouldn’t you prefer having him on your side for a change, beating the crap out of North Korea instead of Netscape?

. . .

For my president I want a mixture of Mother Teresa, Carl Sagan, Warren Buffet, and Darth Vader. Bill has all of their good stuff. His foundation will save more lives than Mother Teresa ever did. He’s got the Carl Sagan intelligence and rational mind. He’s a hugely successful businessman. And I have every reason to believe he can choke people just by concentrating in their general direction. You can’t tell me that wouldn’t be useful at a summit.

So how does a mac fan respond? Second comment, by “mistercharlie”:

Bill would be great. But Steve Jobs is taller, and has better hair.

Exactly.

  1. Stop writing blog posts and start writing your paper, you naughty boy! And please refrain from commenting that I should be writing my paper instead of writing comments on your blog. Thank you.:P

  2. What I think the Gates fans are missing, and what makes that reply hilarious to us Mac users (you knew I was one) is that this reply 1) Mocks the concept of an entrepeneur as pres (Does ANYONE remember the crash and burn oh-yeah-actually-he’s-a-nut-job that was Ross Perot?) 2) Mocks the earnest I-have-a-PLAN energy of the guy who’s proposing this plan. Earnestness annoys us. 3) And hits a note of this-needn’t-be-dignified-with-a-serious-answer. Which we like to flatter ourselves is sophisticated.

So to us, the Gates fan was SERVED. And the fact that you have to be cool enough to get it, to know who REALLY won, just makes it cooler ;-) (It’s hipster dorkiness at it’s best…)

  3. I am a MAC/PC Boy and I thought I would see the day of computer hippies. Thanks for ruining another neato thing…hippies.
