By now this is news to no one, but Sandra Day O’Connor announced her resignation today, giving Bush his first chance to appoint a Supreme Court Justice. Two things about this…

First, I really think Bush ought to go with someone right-of-center… and moderately so at that. It would avoid a bloodbath and make for a quicker confirmation.

Second, I don’t think it would matter if Bush appointed Jimmy Carter, the Dems are going to launch an all-out attack on the nominee and play politics with the whole thing.

…that being the case, maybe he ought to go ahead and appoint someone on the far-right.

Also, from the FARK thread on the same topic, I find this comment instructive (emphasis mine):

The justices that get appointed don’t even need to be Anti-Roe to be a problem. Many Republicans have wanted to put strict interpretationists on the Supreme Court, meaning that they interpret the Constitution to mean exactly what is written, not that they infer implicit rights based on precedent and the intentions of the framers.

Can you believe the NERVE of those Republicans? Wanting to interpret the Constitution to say what is written! Gosh, will they ever learn!?
