I was plugging something into the power strip when I accidentally cut power to the system. Oops. That wasn’t good.

No big deal, I got everything plugged back in and fired it up.

Except that “firing up” is not my computer’s strong point right now. It stopped during the detection of IDE drives. It does that sometimes, usually attributed to my DVD Drive having gone south (but sometimes it comes back to visit and actually works). Anyway, I unplugged everything (except the 2 HDs) and I turn the computer to to hear… a horrible, metallic grinding noise. Bad. News.

I have two hard drives. One of them has windows, my installed programs, and the My Documents folder. The other has EVERYTHING ELSE. I could not originally tell which drive was screeching at me.

Turns out that it’s the primary drive — the one with windows and the programs on it.

This is bad but not awful. 90% of the programs I can reinstall and I didn’t keep too much in the my documents folder. I’m trying not to think about how much was actually in there. On the plus side: the things that absolutely cannot be replaced: my documents and media, are on the hard drive which (as far as I know) still works.

Thank goodness for that. I came in to the office to grab my laptop… we’ll see if I can get my compy up and running over the weekend. No guarantees on that.

Gah. I really need to work backing up my computer more often.

that sucks… when you get to IU you should check out the Common File Storage. It’s only 100 Meg, but its enough to back up papers on… plus it’s good for working on papers at home and printing them at school w/o bothering with disks and such.
