For the past… oh… four or five years… I’ve been using Eudora to handle my mail. It worked well enough and I didn’t like outlook, so I left well enough alone. Today, however, in the process of trying to find a web-form spell checker for Mozilla (which I’ve now switched to as my primary browser) I saw a glowing review of Mozilla Thunderbird — an email client.

I decided to give it a shot. The biggest test was this: can it import my old emails from Eudora. If not, it’s a waste of my time. It did so splendidly, although it took a while (you’ll see why in a second). Then I had to reorganize them because, thankfully, Thunderbird offers much more intuitive ways to store things like sent messages… it’s still not all sorted but it’s much closer. I’m keeping eudora around for now… just in case… but so far, Thunderbird ROCKS.

I also did a LOT of deleting. I don’t think I cut my email count in half, but it’s somewhere between half and two-thirds of what it was yesterday. Despite the gigantic reduction, I’m still have over 13,000 saved emails (dating back to 1999) sitting on my hard drive.

Shit! That’s a lot of email. There were easliy 20,000 that got imported before I decided to cull out the junk.

Of course, on top of being a great email client (so far) it’s also FREE. (And not ad supported, either). It’s also faster and cleaner than Eudora. Give it a shot, I think you’ll like it.
