Michele of A Small Victory ran an email that she received (and her response to it) which refueled my interest in the topic, so now you have to listen to me gripe again.
Ok, folks, say it with me: “It does not take a village to raise a child.” I don’t care what Hillary says. It doesn’t take a village, it doesn’t take a committee, it doesn’t take a miracle. What it takes is — wait for it — PARENTING. I know, I know… you’re all thinking “Pete! That’s so… so… OLD FASHIONED!” And it may be.
There are a lot of people, a LOT of people, who plop their kids down in front of the TV, the Internet, or a video game and leave them there. These parents get all riled up every time something is published or sold that runs counter to their own personal morals or opinions. Why? Because somehow they think that the rest of the world ought to raise their children for them.
What it comes down to is this: these people shouldn’t be allowed to have children to begin with. When a parent says “Hey! Stop selling that adult book to that other adult! It might corrupt my children!” You know they’re either far too stupid to raise children or really have no desire to raise their children anyway.
Some say that the moral decay of our society is ruining our children. I disagree. I think the lack of parenting is causing the moral decay of our society. Because, let’s face it, having balls or ovaries doesn’t make one fit to parent.
At any rate, go read Michele’s take on the situation, it is, as usual, more articulate than mine.
