Law School Search
Hil suggested that I look into Temple and American for their tech law programs, so I added them to my list. I’m telling you, people, the list is supposed to be getting SMALLER. Actually, though, it is. Of the nine schools I’ve looked at so far, I’ve eliminated four (Kentucky, Oklahoma, Richmond, and Miami). The next few schools should be interesting — American, Tulane, Florida, and Alabama. Of course, the plot thickens significantly in six days when I get my scores back. Between you, me, and everyone else on the internet… I can’t wait.
Affirmative Action
As follow-up to yesterday’s post, I skimmed the Supreme Court opinion on the Michigan Law School Affirmative action case and it makes sense, really, though I still don’t know if I buy it. It’s a little disconcerting to see the collective university sigh of relief — hailing this as a “triumph of justice”, a “victory for the nation” and other equally melodramatic things. To be honest, I think it’s kinda crappy. The media spin on the issue has been far too obvious as well, though not consistent. Most radio and TV reports I’ve seen have focused on one of the opinions, mentioning the other almost off-handedly.
From what I’ve read, I’m still not sure if I even consider Michigan’s admissions policy to be considerate of race. Sure, it’s a factor, but it’s not always influential in the decision making process, and it seems that fairly arbitrary when it’s applied. It’ll be a great day when a white kid can apply to college and not have to be worried about being passed over in the name of diversity, especially as more and more schools begin to value diversity more than quality of the entrants. Personally, I blame Jesse Jackson.
UnofficialCKI
As many of you may have found out, the bullies at KI Headquarters have been pushing around the UnofficialCKI admins for not jumping to accommodate their wills. Part of the intimidation was a legal threat to change the name of the site and the logo. They have changed those things, and have also decided it’d be in their best interest to get rid of the domain as well.
I requested that they transfer it back to me so that it can continue to point to the site. They agreed and handed the domain back over to me where they no longer have any control of it. I now have ownership of UnofficialCKI.org and it should be forwarded to the site’s new URL today or tomorrow. I decided to take the URL because I really don’t buy the whole “Common Law Mark” and “Unfair Competition” business, and KI’s going to have to do more than send a letter to get me to take it down at this point.
Reader Email
Finally, on a lighter note, someone was reading the hints for horror film stars and had this to say:
Hey Pete,
I was reading the rules for horror movie fans and it was going great until I realized a lot of the rules contradict or countermand each other. Now where does that leave me? I mean, if I try to follow this stuff, I can’t help but see myself getting hacked, whacked or hot-waxed, none of which seem really pleasant. Are some rules better than others? Are the ones that sort of reiterate meant to emphasise important points or bring out details? If so, why didn’t you get all the details together? I mean, if that monster is after me and I’m checking the list, if it isn’t all in one spot, I might miss something important and — SPLORSH! — there I go.
Don’t get me wron. I appreciate the public minded spirit in which this list was provided. I’m sure you intended to do a great service for the evil-minion-harried teenagers of the world, and there’s a lot of useful stuff there. Your heart was in the right place, as opposed to pumping sloppily on the bathroom floor. I just think it needs some…well…editing.
Thanks all the same.
I had to laugh. You people are pretty funny. Speaking of funny… I’ve finally decided what I’m doing with your funny sayings, but I need some more! Send ‘em in!

I would not agree that the University was involved in any collective sigh of relief. You have the administration who obviously backs their own admissions policy, and of course they are relieved that they at least got a half-win. And then you have the loud obnoxious affirmative action groups which are ecstatic about the half win.
And then you have everyone else… some who support affirmative action, some who really don\’t care, and many who don\’t support it at all. But the media doesn\’t really show that aspect of it because it doesn\’t involved a buch of nutcases shouting from the rooftops and inviting Jesse Jackson to a Rally every other day.
They still think Jesse Jackson coming to campus is a newsworthy event. jesus christ..the guy practicly lives here. Anyway… the students who tend to get on the news because they have a very strong pro-affirmative action stance are often members of the most ridiculed groups on campus. They don\’t speak for all of us.

Not \”The collective University…\” (which would be referring to Michigan as a whole) but \”the collective university\” (which is referring to a collection of universities)
School administrators from all over the US were be loud and public about how great a win this was.
