Three months ago the District Board appointed Kat (one of my board members) to be Conventions and Conferences Chair. They gave her almost nothing to work with. She had the unenviable task of planning and putting together one of the district’s largest conferences in 90 days.
She did a simply amazing job. Everything fell into place this weekend. It was organized, good activities were planned, Strem (or facilitator) did a great job, and everything that Kat was in charge of went swimmingly.
Enter: the district board. Leave it to this group of amazingly talented individuals to dig a hole and then bury themselves in it. This conference usually boasts between 70 and 80 people, is a ton of fun, and keeps people on their toes all weekend. The board managed to get the attendance up near 40.
Governor Kara seemed to be prepared for MER, although she seemed unprepared for the board meeting. The secretary, on the other hand, demonstrated a wonderful array of things next year’s District Secretary should take note of… and they should all be filed under “Do Not Do This.” It really is sad when a club secretary knows the answers to more of the questions in Club Secretary’s round-table than the District Secretary does. Especially when the Club secretary is a Sophomore with no other CK Leadership experience.
I didn’t have a particularly good time, but that was a combination of the low attendance, lack of things for an old has-been to learn, and a few people who tended to do a whole lot of getting on my nerves. I can only imagine how the weekend would’ve gone if Kat hadn’t been in charge.
Of course, I did finally go and personally tell the District Board what I think about their performance this year. I must be much harder to ignore in person. I focused on the absolutely horrible communication that the board’s problems thrive on, and that seems to have been addressed. We’re now going to find out whether the problem was communication, or whether the real problems were hidden by poor communication. I’m not placing any bets on which I think is the case… but rest assured that if it’s the latter, the board has not heard the last from me.
So that’s the story of the weekend. If I ever manage to fix the Gallery, I’ll have pictures up from all sorts of stuff that I haven’t put up yet.

Come on Pete…you should know that crap like this happens in CKI…you\’ve been around long enough.
Yes, yes… it happens. But just because something happens doesn\’t mean I have to like it… or that I shouldn\’t want it to change.
SO very true…and it does get hard when you\’ve been around as long as people like us…leadership trainers get repetitive…I\’m sure you certainly got the board\’s attention.
