Cable internet, a fast computer, and Instant Messenger left on constantly can really grow on a person. Today at around 3:00am we experienced “Cable Difficulties” that lasted almost twelve hours. I spent quite a while on the phone with tech support, but everything is just fine now. It’s odd, though, how useless the computer seems if it’s not connected to the internet. Which is just silly, because there are a million things to do, but somehow everything seems a little more disconnected and boring. I’m such an addict. Is there a support group for such things?

Last night was odd… I grabbed a shower and got to bed around 3:30. I wasn’t tired, though… but I had nothing to do because of aforementioned problems. So I did two things that it’s been forever since I’ve done. I turned off my computer. I don’t mean that I restarted it, no that happens every few days, but I honestly turned it off. It was odd to be sitting in bed without the gentle whirring of the fans inside the big grey box. So quiet, almost erie. I also picked up a book… I read for almost two hours before deciding that I needed to get to bed… it was 5:30, the sun was coming up, and Petey was headed to dreamland.

There’s really no moral to the story… except that I’m behind on my website migration. That, and one day everyone ought to take a few minutes to just listen. REALLY listen. Listen to ALL of the noises that we take for granted and get used to. What would it be like if they were gone. Better? Maybe. Different for sure, though.

  1. oh, i have so been there. the internet fails, and suddenly the fast machine is just… of course there are things i can do, but then you run up against that need to look something up.

i get this sinking feeling of panic when the dsl light goes yellow. it usually doesn\’t take long to get back up, but the whole time i am… distressed.

it\’s an addiction. [sigh] and i love it.

  2. This was especially bad since my usual evening activities include browsing blogs, chatting on AIM and fiddling with my website. None of which could really be done w/o an internet connection. But it was good to pick up a book.

  3. Addiction, huh? Try this for Internet counselling.

    Snicker…
